Dear all

COMOLONGMO FAIR 29 Oct – 2 Nov 2008
at GREENWICH MARKET

I am counting the days and I hope you are as well, we are only 19 days away from the Fair!

Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank Greenwich Hospital Trust and Urban Space Management for their kind support and help with organising the Fair.

It is pleasing to hear from the schools taking part (Black Heath High School, St Ursula’s Convent School, Bow School, and Sydenham School) that the craftwork is progressing well. We will have photographs of the craftwork (that will be for sale at the Fair) soon. Please be ready to dip into your pockets to support and encourage our school children!!

We would like the Fair to be a practical learning experience for the participating schools. The pupils will have the opportunity to try out spinning and weaving; to gain practical knowledge of concepts like Fair Trade, sustainability, social justice, etc; to experience marketing and business practice and see for themselves the setting up of events/sales; to design products and bring them to market; and to bring awareness of Kumbeshwar Technical School (KTS) work and its products, earn vital funds for KTS and encourage Fair Trade.

I am sure, with your help, we will make the Fair a success. As always, a large part of our work relies on your support. If you feel you and/or your family and/or friends may be able to help with the Fair, do please write to us. In particular, we need volunteers to help with the stalls, spinning and weaving workshops, fund raising and many other tasks to ensure things run smoothly!

For the Fair, we have 2 artisans and 2 support workers coming to present the weaving and spinning demonstration and workshops. We are looking for friends and families who would be interested to share and experience British culture with our visiting guests by putting up one or more of 3 adults from Nepal who are intrinsic to the Fair (2 women and a man, all over the age of 30) for some or all of their stay. We believe this will be a great opportunity to learn and understand their culture and to see how the schools’ involvement is helping the communities in Nepal. They will be arriving on 27th October and leaving on 5th November 2008. If you think you might be interested in hosting, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please write to me directly at Kabindra@comolongmo.com and/or any of our team krissyhanson@hotmail.com and lizsowden@hotmail.com.

To remind you what we have at the Fair, I will run through the programmes again:

1. THE RUG DESIGN COMPETITION

We have a rug design competition for pupils of the schools taking part. We have selected the four best designs and converted them into rugs. Visitors to the Fair will be able to vote for their favourite from among these four(you may also vote through our website www.comolongmo.com), and the designer of that rug will be awarded it as a prize.

2. PAPERCRAFT

We have supplied hand made paper to the schools for pupils to take part in a paper-craft competition. All the work will be displayed and sold. The funds raised through the sale of the pupils’ work will go towards the KTS.

We will be awarding a prize for each of the two best works.

3. SPINNING AND WEAVING WORKSHOPS

We have a professional spinner and weaver visiting from KTS for the Fair to give demonstrations of spinning yarn and weaving rugs. We plan to have three spinning wheels and three looms and hope to have interactive demonstrations of rug weaving and spinning at which visitors can try their hand.

4. SECONDMENT FOR A WORK EXPERIENCE AT KTS

We are hoping to offer two pupils the opportunity to go to Nepal to see the impact that KTS has on life of individuals in Nepal.

I hope you will be able to attend the Fair, which I am sure will be most enjoyable and rewarding, and I would be very grateful if you could please invite all your family and friends.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our friends for the help and support we are receiving in organising the fair.

Please do not hesitate to write to me if you have any queries directly at Kabindra@comolongmo.com.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in Greenwich market.
