Dear All
We are delighted
to announce our fourth “Schools Rug Design Competition 2011”.
In the last four years 8 schools have taken part in the competition.
We are grateful to Paul and Liz Wallace from David’s Bookshop
in Letchworth for their kind sponsorship and organising schools
in Letchworth and Baldock areas for the rug design competition.
This year three schools - St Christopher School and Princess Helena
School in Letchworth and St John’s School in Baldock –
are taking part in the rug design competition. We believe by involving
young pupils in the projects while it hugely helps to raise pupil’s
awareness of the Fair Trade, the project is designed to help school
pupils develop their talent in designing and craft from the tender
age raising their aspirations and achievements and opening up
more opportunities for their futures.
On 4th June
2011 at an austere judging of the rug design competition at David’s
Bookshop in Letchworth, a panel of independent judges comprising
from the professional artist - Mr Nigel Carrick (a ceramic artist),
Mrs Vanessa Stone (Paper Cut Artist), Mrs Liz Wallace (Co-owner
of David’s Bookshop in Letchworth) and Miss Hetty Wallace
voted the four winning designs of the 2011 rug design competition.
It was privilege for us to have Hetty Wallace 13 years old judge
in the panel. We are grateful to the judges for their time, support
to our endeavour and help with the judging. Please read below

I hope you
will spare a few minutes of your time to encourage the young designers
by voting for your favourite design. Please note if there is any
design you like and would like to buy, this will be huge encouragement
to a young designer(s) so we would be more than happy to accept

JUDGES PROFILE
i.
MRS VANESSA STONE
Vanessa Stone
is a cut paper artist based in Letchworth Garden City. She cuts
into single pieces of paper with a surgeon's scalpel to make intricate
paper cuts. Some are deceptively simple. Vanessa strives hard
to capture perfect balance between light and dark. Through cutting
away the paper, she uses image and text to explore realities and
fantasies of buildings, bodies and being alive.
Paper hasn't
always been Vanessa's chosen medium. She trained in carpet and
rug design at the UK's only degree course at Kidderminster College
and Wolverhampton University. After graduating in 1990 Vanessa
won the New Designer of the Year Award for rugs and spent the
following ten years making and designing rugs, embroideries and
banners for exhibition and commission.
